How to Get Rid of Furniture When Downsizing (Without the Stress)

April 06, 20263 min read

Downsizing sounds simple… until you start looking around your home and realize just how much stuff you actually have.

Furniture is usually the biggest challenge. It’s heavy, it takes up space, and let’s be honest—some of it holds memories. So the question becomes:
How do you actually get rid of furniture when downsizing?

I’ve been through multiple moves myself, and I can tell you—there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But there are some smart strategies that can make the process a whole lot easier.

Start With the Big Question: Is It Worth Moving?

Before you decide what to do with a piece of furniture, ask yourself:

  • Does it fit the new space?

  • Does it match the style of where I’m going?

  • Is it worth the cost to move and store it?

In my experience, the answer is often no—and that’s okay.

In fact, every time we’ve moved, we’ve realized that our existing furniture didn’t quite work in the new home anyway. Either it was too big, didn’t match the style, or just didn’t function the way we needed it to.

Option 1: Sell It Locally

If your furniture is in good condition, selling it can be surprisingly easy.

Platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Nextdoor make it simple to connect with local buyers.

I’ve personally sold everything from a kitchen table to bed frames and dressers this way—and honestly, it was much easier than I expected.

Option 2: Donate It

If selling feels like too much work, donation is a great alternative.

Organizations like Habitat for Humanity often accept furniture, and there are also local charities and women’s shelters that help families get back on their feet.

And here’s something to keep in mind—just because you’re letting it go doesn’t mean it’s going to waste. It might be exactly what someone else needs.

Option 3: Estate Sales or Garage Sales

If you have a lot of items to clear out, an estate sale or community garage sale can be a good option.

This works especially well if you're downsizing significantly and need to move a large volume of items quickly.

A Real-Life Perspective

When we moved from Florida the first time, I’ll be honest—I probably gave away things I could have sold. I just didn’t know about platforms like Nextdoor yet.

But by the time we moved from Colorado, I had figured it out—and I sold a lot of furniture.

Later, when we moved again, we made intentional decisions based on cost, convenience, and practicality. Sometimes selling made sense. Other times, donating was the better choice.

Here’s the Truth Most People Need to Hear

You should not feel guilty about getting rid of furniture.

If it served its purpose in your life, it did its job.

Downsizing is about creating a home that works for your next chapter—not holding onto things that no longer fit your lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

Whether you sell, donate, or give things away, the goal is simple:

Make your move easier, not harder.

Because the less you carry with you, the more freedom you’ll have in your next home.
