Cleaning Hacks When Selling Your Home

When you're preparing to sell your home, the goal isn’t to stock up on more cleaning products…

…it’s to make your home shine without adding more clutter to pack later.

One of my favorite go-to solutions is simple:

👉 White vinegar + water

It’s multipurpose, budget-friendly, and — unlike many commercial cleaners — it doesn’t leave behind lingering odors.

Even better? It doesn’t leave a sticky film that attracts dust and dirt, which means surfaces stay cleaner longer.

And when you're getting ready for showings, fewer re-cleaning sessions is a win.

Vinegar works beautifully on:

  • Countertops (non-stone)

  • Glass

  • Fixtures

  • Appliances

  • Bathroom surfaces

And for stainless steel?
Clean with vinegar + water, then polish with a small amount of grapeseed oil for a streak-free shine.

Simple. Effective. No extra bottles.

But vinegar isn’t the only smart shortcut sellers can use.

Here are a few other popular cleaning hacks that help homes feel fresh, bright, and buyer-ready:

1. Baking Soda for Odor Control

Instead of artificial air fresheners (which buyers often distrust), use baking soda to naturally neutralize smells.

Place small bowls in:

  • Closets

  • Refrigerators

  • Mudrooms

  • Pet areas

You can also sprinkle it on carpets before vacuuming to help remove trapped odors.

2. Lemon for Hard Water & Disposal Freshening

Lemon is a natural degreaser and deodorizer.

Use it to:

  • Remove hard water spots on faucets

  • Shine chrome

  • Freshen garbage disposals (drop in a few peels and run with cold water)

It leaves behind a clean, subtle scent — not an artificial one.

3. Magic Erasers for Scuff Marks

Walls take a beating over time.

A melamine sponge (like a Magic Eraser) works wonders on:

  • Wall scuffs

  • Light switch plates

  • Baseboards

  • Door frames

These small fixes photograph well and instantly make a home feel cared for.

4. Dryer Sheets for Baseboards

A surprising trick:

Wipe baseboards with a dryer sheet after cleaning.

This helps repel dust, keeping them looking cleaner during the showing period.

5. Coffee Grounds to Absorb Odors

Buyers are sensitive to smells.

Dry used coffee grounds placed in small dishes can absorb lingering odors in:

  • Bathrooms

  • Closets

  • Basements

No fake fragrance needed.

6. Hydrogen Peroxide for Brightening

Hydrogen peroxide works well for:

  • Grout touch-ups

  • Whitening dingy sink areas

  • Removing mild organic stains

It’s especially helpful in bathrooms where brightness matters.

7. Steam for “Chemical-Free” Cleaning

If you have a handheld steamer, it can clean:

  • Tile grout

  • Shower tracks

  • Kitchen grease buildup

All without leaving behind residue.

The Big Picture

When preparing your home for sale, buyers aren’t just looking for cleanliness…

They’re looking for a home that feels:

✔️ Fresh
✔️ Well-maintained
✔️ Neutral

Using simple, residue-free methods helps your home stay show-ready longer — without filling your cabinets with products you'll just have to move later.

Because the goal during this season isn’t accumulation…

…it’s simplification.
